Sometime in 2003, flyers
resembling blank pages of a journal were made available at all 77th
Street outlets, " Share with us your inner thoughts," the flyers said, "
something you've never told, something you've always wanted to tell,
your innermost secrets..."
We were overwhelmed by the
number of young people who responded. Their 'voices' were heard-warming
and heart-wrenching. And when we read between the lines, we could feel
their desperate need to be heard.
My Voice hopes to bring
release, relief and comfort to the youth, and encourage them to express
themselves - something our culture and environment constrains us to do.
We believe that our
collected efforts will bring awareness, reflection and acceptance.
Most of the letters in
my voice have been printed in the writers' original handwriting. names
have been shortened to ensure anonymity. - Elim Chew

Project
Youth Regeneration (PYR) Project
PYR Services’ mission is to empower the physically challenged and
out-of-school youths and maximise their potential to lead dignified and
independent lives.
Youths with physical challenges (PCY) consists of individuals who due to
their physical disabilities, have found uphill challenges in seeking
employment in the open market. The main reasons for their rejection from
many employers are the lack of opportunities and ‘work-readiness’
skills.
At the same time, there are a group of youths who are no longer in
school. The out-of-school youths (OSY) have only lowly-paid jobs to look
forward to due to their pre-school leaving stint. However, they are
known for their street-smart capabilities and survival instinct.
The project is dedicated to empower the PCYs & OSYs to overcome the
challenges they face. The tripartite collaboration among Tyem Academy,
AWWA TM Inc. and ERA Real Estate is specifically
designed to provide employment opportunities for these two groups of
people in the real estate industry under the assistance of real estate
agents at the established ERA Real Estate.
PYR will encourage the self-sufficiency and entrepreneurial spirit of
the PCYs and OSYs, building their self-confidence despite them not
receiving ready acceptance from the public. PYR serves as a platform for
these youths to discover their strengths, and be taken through a process
of self-regeneration and ultimately, self-empowerment, to realise their
fullest potential. |
