Unable to cope with their studies
o Due to a lack of good foundation in primary education, the consequences are
manifested in their secondary years
o Most students in Tyem indicate that at Pri 3, they were showing signs of being
unable to cope with the school's curriculum
o Unable to have a decent mastering of the English language at primary school is
the main cause of their inability to cope with the other subjects
o Generally, parents were not supervising well or providing them with the guidance to excel
or sustain them in school
o Associating with the friends that are in similar predicaments and further
encouraging each other to play truant
o School lack of strong proactive measures of using volunteers, parents and/or vendors
to have enrichment classes in a more radical approach (mothers of home school
kids generally have interesting teaching methods)
o At secondary level, the high risk-students are waiting for a flash point to
happen and confirm their belief that school is not for them
Proactive measures that schools could adopt
There are 2 main types of students that Tyem have observed, one with bad
attitude and good attitude toward life in general. In this situation, both groups are not academically
inclined but one group could be coached and motivated easier.
With a bad attitude and poor behavioural disposition, a high-risk student
generally will continue to be a thorn in the flesh for his/her school and
teachers. The corrective actions are generally reactive and have low success
rates. However, for every one student that is motivated to mend his/her ways,
there is much to rejoice. A youth-at-risk’s life is precious and should not be
dismissed without a hard fight to win him/her over. The process is generally a
long and tiring journey of endearment. This approach does require 4 parties to
be actively involved, namely the teachers, parents, youth workers (3rd party
vendors) and
volunteers. Most of the time, the school resources are stretched and hence
effective programmes are not commercially and reasonably viable.
